There is no doubt that the best way to help prevent catching the coronavirus is to wash your hands for at least 20 seconds, whenever you can. However, when you're in a rush or there is no water and soap available, a good hand sanitizer can go a long way, so long as it's properly formulated.
According to Statistics Canada, demand for hand sanitizer increased by 735% for the week ending March 14, 2020, relative to the same period last year. With stores running out of popular brands, consumers are looking to find ways to stay safe outside the home.
However, did you know that Health Canada regulates the conformity of such products?
To find the right hand sanitizer, the most important factor is its alcohol content, but how you apply your sanitizing product is also a factor in its effectiveness.
Alcohol content
An effective hand sanitizer has between 60% and 95% alcohol content. If you drop below 60%, the effectiveness drops very dramatically, which may give you a false sense of security.
You also have to be very wary of hand sanitizers or lotions that claim an ''alternative ingredient to alcohol'' that is less harmful (such as coconut oil) because those ingredients are not as effective as alcohol.
Applying hand sanitizer properly matters
According to Samantha Yammine, ( https://twitter.com/heysciencesam) a stem cell biologist who educates people through her Instagram and Twitter accounts, how you apply your hand sanitizer affects how effective it is.
Before you apply the product to your hands, Yammine said to check the recommended amount to dispense on the label, since it can vary based on the alcohol percentage your sanitizer has.
Then, rub the sanitizer to coat your hands entirely and let it completely dry. Do not wipe any of it off before it dries, or it won't be as effective.
It's also important to note that if your hands are visibly dirty, the hand sanitizer won't be as effective. This is when you need to use soap and water to properly wash your hands.
